Florida Unemployment Compensation: Impact on Felons in Florida

If you are a convicted felon in Florida, there is no doubt you understand the impact of employment obstacles that lie ahead of you.

For many felons in Florida, finding work can be challenging especially when unemployment claims are so high.  Employers, typically in Florida, will consider unemployed workers as a good resource for hiring candidates for employment at lower-than-average wages but often felons who are unemployed are overlooked.   If you lost a job recently, or if you are struggling to find work, it is important to reach out to the Florida unemployment office to determine if you qualify for compensation benefits.   Your felony should have no bearing on your unemployment eligibility and, even if you don’t qualify for benefits, these offices can often guide you into opportunities for finding gainful employment based on your circumstances.  When looking for work, always consider options that are typically thinking outside-the-box and remember that you may have an option to get unemployment compensation in Florida no matter what your working situation may be.  Apply but do not be afraid of rejection or denial as the simple contact with the office will give you a jump start on finding work.  It is also important to keep in mind that, even if you are approved for unemployment compensation, your maximum benefit will be around $275 a week but can be as low as $32 a week.

The whole focus in using this type of state benefit should be, therefore, in networking and utilizing their job placement resources.   And, as always, be sure to consider the jobs for felons using the Indeed.com portal – providing unique job listing that you may not otherwise find through traditional job search methods.  And consider those jobs that are made available to seniors in your area as these may be jobs that are more lenient in their hiring process.
